“Colitas de Algodón o la Rebelion de las Ratas” is a contemporary theatrical fable inspired by the satirical spirit of George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Set in a playground around a dried artificial lake known as the “Duck Park,” the play follows the fragile coexistence between squirrels and rats. What begins as a seemingly harmonious society slowly collapses when the squirrels’ fluffy tails, symbols of beauty and privilege, become the catalyst for a growing conflict over power and social hierarchy.
Through dark humor and allegory, the work reflects on revolution, class struggle, discrimination, and the corruption of political ideals. The utopian vision of an egalitarian society gradually turns into a bitter struggle that reveals the fragility of social movements and the mechanisms of privilege.
Written by Mexican playwrights Roberto Duarte Lemus and Daniel Ferreira Aparicio, the play was adapted into German under the title “Oachkatzlschwoaf oder Die Rebellion der Raten”.
The Vienna production was created by Rodrigo Martinez, who directed the piece and designed the stage, lighting, and puppets. The production premiered in 2022 at the Schubert Theater in Vienna and ran for two years. The collaboration with the theater originated through the Kültür Gemma! open call supporting international artists living in Vienna.
